Bathroom Redesign

This century old Toronto townhouse faced a lot of the typical problems of an older home such as little natural light, narrow layouts, separated rooms and most of all – small bathrooms. Spaces by Jacflash converted this 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom second level, into a modern master suite by almost tripling the existing bathroom size, and redesigning the spatial layout of this house to fit the lifestyle of the home owner.

This spacious 4 piece bathroom hosts a large stand up shower, free standing soaker tub, double sink vanity, and separate water closet. With mostly Carrara marble wall tiles we chose an accent tile pattern with a thin Nero Marquina marble tile installed in a herringbone pattern for the shower.

All fixtures used are from Rubinet, a well known brand that designers and plumbers love to use because of their reputation and wide array of finish options. Satin brass is not only one of the hottest trends in faucets, but is also extremely low maintenance which is a must for our busy client.

When it comes to bathrooms, next to finish, the shape of the fixture is a really important factor that should drive your choice. Interior Designer, Barbara Kaplan suggests, “looking at the shape of the sink, the edge of the counter, the mirror (if the sink is in a bathroom), the door’s style and lighting fixtures. Then ask yourself, ‘Will the faucet’s finish complement the whole room?'” In this bathroom there is a great use of square geometry and sharp modern edges, so we decided to go with a very simple but curved goose neck sink and tub filler, a round rain head, and all rounded cross handles.

An often overlooked design element of bathrooms is the lighting. Unfortunately there are some restrictions in the OBC that do not allow you to have that extravagant chandelier over the bathtub, but there is still some flexibility to get creative. We found this gorgeous wall sconce at an antique store in downtown Toronto with the same satin brass finish. The crystal bars give it some sparkle to match the mirrors on either side, as well as an industrial base to avoid being too feminine.

When wood flooring is sealed and protected properly, it can be just as resistant as other types of flooring in a bathroom. According to HGTV, “Hardwood floors – whether restored, recycled or installed new – have become one of the most popular choices in every area of the home, and the bathroom is no exception. With a few extra precautions, wood floors can perform as well in bathrooms as they do everywhere else.” Continuing the white oak engineered flooring in the bathroom also emphasizes the symmetry of the entirely new second level.

The towel rack was designed custom by Spaces by Jacflash, to be suspended from the ceiling. It is a unique focal point and saves wall space for the full length mirror on the entire south wall.

This bathroom is the most drastic change and heart of this renovation. The versatility in materials and finishes create a glamorous, yet sophisticated palette.
