Retro Meets Modern Apartment Kitchen

Spaces by Jacflash gave a major makeover to a small kitchen that was stuck in the 90s, with maple cabinets, laminate counters, and a dusty rose ceramic tile backsplash. We transformed it into an open, airy space with a ‘modern-meets-retro’ vibe to connect with the concept of the previously done living room. This warm white colour pallet, consisting of bright white cabinets, a bone refrigerator and creamy backsplash gives a very clean, fresh look. By adding chrome details it adds a touch of sparkle to enhance a sense of femininity.

The retro off white Caloric fridge was our jumping off point. Its tall but slim frame gave us the option of adding more storage in between the oven. Taking away the upper hanging cabinets above the sink made the entire room open concept, and reducing the bar-top to a level island gave so much more space for entertaining. Adding a microwave above the oven with a built in hood also gave us much more counter space, which was one of our client’s main requests.

Using quartz is a great way to get a high end marble look, for a fraction of the price. Using quartz is also much more resistant material, and will not stain or chip as easily as a natural stone. These Ikea cabinets were a huge cost saver. The style we chose has a built in finger channel which reduced the need for hardware. Splurging on items like the fridge, counter and lighting, make this kitchen look more extravagant without the price tag of a custom kitchen. The light was a modern take on a retro inspired Sputnik light, that also fit perfectly in this galley style layout. It has a dramatic presence from both the entrance and dining room. The chrome finish ties in with the new sink faucet, and handles on the fridge.

Continuing the concept of eclectic style was a challenge in such a small space, but keeping the main pieces white and bright allowed us to get playful with accessories like the sage green clock, the linen towels, small rag rug, and wooden cutting boards. Luckily our client already had a beautiful wooden table, so we paired it with some Mid-Century inspired dining chairs in a salt and pepper fabric and chrome legs to in the dining room and kitchen.

Globe and Mail Feature

Spaces by Jacflash is thrilled to be featured in the Globe and Mail for our design of @jusreign’s downtown condo.

Spaces by Jacflash transforms a once dated and claustrophobic living space into an open, airy and alluring haven

Spaces by Jacflash transformed this once claustrophobic, dated dining room into an open and airy, gorgeous living space.

We removed a dated plate rail that had made the the ceilings feel very low. We also removed the stair wall, exposed the brick and hid a bulkhead by transforming it into a feature to accentuate our new crown moulding.

Spaces by Jacflash custom designed these modern, matte black windows, manufactured by @futurezona and added some Parisian style moulding to give the room additional glamour and character.

Installing wide plank, white oak floors, a large patina mirror and a custom slatted stair guard to elongate the ceilings all make the space feel more open and grande. The french style panels are one of our favourite aspects of the space as we love that it adds architectural interest to the room and makes the space feel classic. The patina mirror was inserted into one of the panels to accentuate the mouldings and to make them look original, adding to the Parisian loft feel we were going for.

For lighting, we used a large crystal chandelier that we contrasted with brand new modern pendants in both the hall and living area. These two pendants are completely different styles, but they are both dark to match the new windows and to add a more masculine touch to the space.

We also painted the exposed brick white to contrast with the sleek stairs.

The overall concept of this space was to combine and craft together various styles of design, including Parisian, classic, modern and industrial to create an alluring and refined space.

Spaces By Jacflash transforms Rachel David’s quirky living room into a sophisticated living space

Spaces by Jacflash amped up our newest client and my good friend Rachel David’s quirky condo into a more sophisticated and put-together living space. (@racheldavid)

We found inspiration from eclectic, traditional spaces. Every piece we chose serves more than one purpose and can live in her home for years.

Our favourite element is the fireplace. This unique built-in has a large mantel and shelving tucked away in the corner, but was originally a dated maple wood. We sanded and painted it —along with the window ledges— white, to brighten and update the room.

The ‘brick’ we used around the fireplace is a porcelain tile that serves to make the mantle look more finished.

With a smaller budget, we had to get creative and use our resources appropriately. Many of the pieces we purchased were inexpensive, and often antiques. We had our first visit to the Hamilton Antique Mall, which is a hidden gem for affordability. The other more modern pieces like the sofa and coffee table were purchased from Ikea.

The plethora of paintings Rachel inherited from her grandmother were a major treat. She had so many to choose from; our role was to curate them in a more effective way. Instead of having the large pieces scattered around her apartment, we created a gallery wall above the couch. This living room looks so bright and colourful, but the only actual source of colour is in the art and accessories, which we love.

Finishing touches like curtains and plants really make this living room feel like it has been put together over time and fits our client’s lifestyle and personality. This project was such a success that Rachel has decided to re-do her kitchen with us next!

Before and After Video Reveal of Youtuber Jus Reign’s Toronto Condo Designed by Spaces by Jacflash

Spaces by jacflash is super excited to reveal youtuber Jus Reign’s Downtown Toronto condo!

The theme that Jus Reign requested was “Reign Forest”, so we pulled some of his existing furniture with new pieces, adding organic textures, endless plants and warmer tones throughout the space.

The problem that a lot of condo residents are facing is trying to make a cookie cutter condo feel like home. We addressed this issue by creating a completely custom and unique space for Jus Reign’s “reignforest” condo.

To avoid being too thematic with the reignforest vibe, Spaces by Jacflash chose a natural colour palette with organic textures. To brighten up an otherwise boring hallway, we added a green vinyl, to introduce the theme to the rest of the space. Typically condos come with standard, flush mount lighting, so we’ve swapped out those lights with a matte black pendant and a great alternative to pot lights. The kitchen was already beautiful, but to add extra seating we added two stools on the island and a rope light pendant above the sink.

The affordable mid century modern sideboard is perfect for entertaining and storage. Jus Reign wanted to use his existing dining room set, so to tie it all together we added a glass globe chandelier pendant. A huge existing feature in this condo is the centred fireplace.

To showcase this feature, we’ve installed a concrete wallpaper and wood slat barrier wall. Again in the living room, he wanted to keep his existing sectional. The main changes we made to this room was with the use of fabric in the throws, pillows and rug.

In addition, the coffee table and side tables allow for easy entertaining. This feature wall is an affordable, but showcasing TV console. It’s amazing what a different textiles make. White, crisp bedding, a natural coloured jute rug, and hanging sconces, frame the existing furniture. You would not be able to tell you were in a condo by looking at these faux wood beams!

All the bathroom needed was a few accent pieces. The wood side table and large faux plant wall create a lush oasis.

Working with Jus Reign was obviously beyond entertaining and we loved everything about this project- the beautiful condo, his unique theme, the freedom he gave us to design and of course, his enthusiasm with not only the process but the final outcome!
