02/11/18 Fitness by Jacflash, Women’s Legs, Booty and Shoulder Workshop with Trainer Lara Marquez and Owner of Sugar Toronto, Karen Holek

Get, that, dirt off your shoulders…¬†ūüĎä

On Sunday, February 11th from 12:30-2:30, #FitnessbyJacflash had our Sunday workshop with trainer Lara Marquez who is heated up her BOOTY workout series with a shoulders burner. Squats, Presses, Rows and more.

Though it was hailing outside, the loft room was¬†¬†ūüĒ•

We were also super excited to have the owner of Sugar Toronto, Karen Holek speak for half an hour at the workshop. Karen has been sugaring (an all natural form of hair removal) for 7 years. Being exposed to women in an intimate scenario has brought up many sensitive conversations about self love. The trust gained from her clients over the years has given her the unique opportunity to empower women by normalizing and desexualizing the vagina.

Incredible sponsors included Genuine Health, Fiji Water, BIO RAW, One Life Meals, Routine Cream, Vital Proteins and more!

We were also thrilled to have BIO RAW at the event giving us a taste of their nutritious and delicious bowls

Also special thank you to our volunteer trainers Meagan @missmegfit and KristyLee @musclebarbie.kristylee.

Bathroom Redesign

This century old Toronto townhouse faced a lot of the typical problems of an older home such as little natural light, narrow layouts, separated rooms and most of all – small bathrooms. Spaces by Jacflash converted this 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom second level, into a modern master suite by almost tripling the existing bathroom size, and redesigning the spatial layout of this house to fit the lifestyle of the home owner.

This spacious 4 piece bathroom hosts a large stand up shower, free standing soaker tub, double sink vanity, and separate water closet. With mostly Carrara marble wall tiles we chose an accent tile pattern with a thin Nero Marquina marble tile installed in a herringbone pattern for the shower.

All fixtures used are from Rubinet, a well known brand that designers and plumbers love to use because of their reputation and wide array of finish options. Satin brass is not only one of the hottest trends in faucets, but is also extremely low maintenance which is a must for our busy client.

When it comes to bathrooms, next to finish, the shape of the fixture is a really important factor that should drive your choice. Interior Designer, Barbara Kaplan suggests, “looking at the shape of the sink, the edge of the counter, the mirror (if the sink is in a bathroom), the door’s style and lighting fixtures. Then ask yourself, ‘Will the faucet’s finish complement the whole room?'” In this bathroom there is a great use of square geometry and sharp modern edges, so we decided to go with a very simple but curved goose neck sink and tub filler, a round rain head, and all rounded cross handles.

An often overlooked design element of bathrooms is the lighting. Unfortunately there are some restrictions in the OBC that do not allow you to have that extravagant chandelier over the bathtub, but there is still some flexibility to get creative. We found this gorgeous wall sconce at an antique store in downtown Toronto with the same satin brass finish. The crystal bars give it some sparkle to match the mirrors on either side, as well as an industrial base to avoid being too feminine.

When wood flooring is sealed and protected properly, it can be just as resistant as other types of flooring in a bathroom. According to HGTV, “Hardwood floors – whether restored, recycled or installed new – have become one of the most popular choices in every area of the home, and the bathroom is no exception. With a few extra precautions, wood floors can perform as well in bathrooms as they do everywhere else.” Continuing the white oak engineered flooring in the bathroom also emphasizes the symmetry of the entirely new second level.

The towel rack was designed custom by Spaces by Jacflash, to be suspended from the ceiling. It is a unique focal point and saves wall space for the full length mirror on the entire south wall.

This bathroom is the most drastic change and heart of this renovation. The versatility in materials and finishes create a glamorous, yet sophisticated palette.

Spaces by Jacflash’s Custom Picket Stairs

This week, Spaces by Jacflash’s custom slatted stair guard was finally installed! It is one of the final installations of our Ossington house project. The house originally had a load bearing wall closing off the first to second floor stairs, which made the stairway feel very narrow, and dining room dark and separated from the living room and entrance. By taking this wall down, we have created an open concept/modern plan without taking away from the character of the older home. Taking out the load bearing wall involved a structural engineer and approval from the city, but the outcome was worth the extra steps.

This original drawing shows what parts of the original brick wall we planned on exposing, as well as how the stair guard would be designed. Having each picket on the first level attach to each tread allowed the stairs to be almost 5″ wider than the original. The pickets are 1″ thick x 3″ wide, which allow some separation when you are walking adjacent to the stairs, but sitting in the dining room, you are still able to see the exposed brick and anyone using the stairs. It also allows for any natural light from the dining room through the stairs during the day, and the hallway light from upstairs to illuminate the main level at night.

On the second level, having the pickets start from the new nosing to the ceiling, makes the first floor pickets look almost as if they run through the second level floor to the third level. We took this into account when we designed the ‘recessed ceiling’ in the dining room to disguise a bulk head for the new master bathroom, and installed it adjacent to the pickets.

We chose a white oak material for the pickets and nosing to match the new hardwood floors, treads, risers, and handrails. Next week we plan on sealing the stairs and guards to match the floors, which involves a white wash and matte clear coat. The white oak warm tones make this house feel more welcoming against the almost entirely monochromatic palettes of the living room, master bedroom and en suite bathroom.

The overall concept for this redesign was juxtaposing traditional bones with modern finishes, lines, symmetry and technology. These stairs work so well as a conversation against the Victorian inspired mouldings and original brick. On the second level we love how symmetrical the hall is. We chose black hardware for the handrail to tie into the black door knobs to the bedrooms.

This design was one of the leading factors to the concept of the entire renovation. Fluidity between spaces connecting all white walls, with warm white oak floors, and black metal accents is simple, yet captivating. It is an amazing feeling to see it all come into place and look better than we imagined!
